Who Is Sersi? A Look At Marvel Comics’ Eternals Characters – Comic Years

When the Eternals movie was first announced at SDCC 2019 for the MCU’s Phase 4, people had questions. Who the heck were these Eternals? How will they fit into the MCU? Well, now we know (kind of). Marvel Studios released the final Eternals trailer and fans got a clearer picture of what these beautiful superheroes will be doing in the MCU. We wrote about the history of the Eternals, but basically, they’re the creation of divine beings, the Celestials (Ego, Peter Quill’s father, was one of these beings). The Celestials created early humanoids as a way to kickstart human evolution, thus creating the Eternals (the gorgeous, good-hearted ones) and the Deviants (the ugly, evil ones). The former was tasked with protecting Earth (and later, humankind) from the wicked plans of the Deviants. While we’ve gotten a glimpse of these new characters, I’m going to take a closer look at each of the 10 new superheroes. In this first post of the series, I’m asking: who is Sersi?
Sersi, who is played by Gemma Chan, is basically immortal, like all the other Eternals. She can manipulate non-sentient matter and has a variety of powers including super strength, healing powers, telepathy, and teleportation. She’s also a talented fashion designer, a skilled dancer, and has a knack for languages (she knows the Kree language and also speaks the ancient language of her fellow Eternal, Gilgamesh). Sersi has a genuine soft spot for humanity and has helped them in small ways throughout the centuries.

The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby and he based them off of a mix of science fiction and classic mythology. If you’re wondering why the name “Sersi” rings a bell, it’s probably because you’re remembering your high school English class when you read The Odyssey. Sersi (spelled Circe in Homer’s work) famously turned Odysseus and his crew into pigs when they came to her island Aeaea and menaced her, and yes, Marvel’s Sersi is the very same. Throughout the years, she played a part in many major events, such as visiting Rome during the reign of Nero and helping Merlin in Camelot. In recent times she became a famous socialite and entertainer, hosting parties in her New York loft for celebrities, superheroes, and other influential individuals. In the Eternals movie, she’s a museum curator.
Sersi also has a complicated romantic history. She is presently dating a human named Dane Whitman (played in the film by Game of Thrones star, Kit Harrington), but she’s had an on-again, off-again relationship with her fellow Eternal, Ikaris (played by another Game of Thrones alum, Richard Madden).
Sersi eventually helps the Avengers thanks to her superhero friend connections, which only makes me more excited to see how Eternals will fit into the MCU’s Phase 4.
